Driven by the East Arnhem Shire Council, and executive team, Region C has been established as a "Social Entrepreneurial" Private Company which is 100% owned by the East Arnhem Shire Council.
Region C's charter is to maximise profits, via its Modular Building and Maintenance divisions and provide long term, meaningful employment for Indigenous people in the nine remote East Arnhem Land communities. Potentially this could provide employment for up to three Indigenous people in each community, (a total of 27), on long term apprenticeships with a structured mentoring program by qualified tradesmen.
100% of profits generated by Region C will be distributed to nine Aboriginal communities of East Arnhem Land for the collective benefit of more than 10,000 Indigenous peoples across the nine communities.
This money could be earmarked for such pressing needs as road improvement projects, education (numeracy & literacy) or any other high priority community need determined by the East Arnhem Shire Council in consultation with its Indigenous Community Advisory Boards. This is a bold, committed strategy initiated by the East Arnhem Shire Council.
After an exhaustive due diligence process to determine efficacy of the business and an extremely successful 12 month trial of the Modular Building Program which resulted in the building of seven homes, one cyclone shelter and a multi-purpose AFL change room – all built and transported to communities in East Arnhem Land, Region C officially commenced operations on July 1, 2011.
